This event has ended.

The exhibition is curated in collaboration with Maria Lago of Familia Editions.

Cut-Out
1. (of a motor or engine) suddenly stop operating.
synonyms: stop working, cease to function, stop, fail, give out;
2. (of a person) leave quickly, especially so as to avoid a boring or awkward situation.

LMAKgallery presents the exhibition Cut-Out with works by Tauba Auerbach, Johanna Calle, Juliana Cerqueira Leite, Sandra Cinto, Matías Duville, Lubaina Himid, Maria Laet, Mateo López, Nicolás Paris, Sheryl Oppenheim, Rosângela Rennó, and Christian Vinck Henriquez. On view will be six distinctive and special artists’ books.

This exhibition was developed with the idea to present contemporary artists’ books that reference one from a previous decade, from the 50s until 00s based on their concept. The curators created a dialogue between the new books and their reference: Henri Matisse’s Jazz Book was paired with the book Partitura (Ikrek, 2014) by Sandra Cinto; Bruno Munari’s Libri Illegibili (60s) with the book Touching (Small Editions, 2018) by Sheryl Oppenheim or Four Basic Kinds of Lines & Colour (70s) by Sol LeWitt with Taube Auerbach’s [2,3]; The Valise (MoMA, 2017) a book project with Johanna Calle, Matías Duville, Maria Laet, Mateo López, Nicolás Paris, Rosângela Rennó, and Christian Vinck Henriquez has been paired with Sophie Calle’s Suite Venitienne (80s); Louise Bourgeois’ Album (90s) had been juxtapose with Lubaina Himid’s Freedom Kangas (Bookworks, 2018) and lastly Olafur Eliasson’s Your House was the reference for A Potential Space by Juliana Cerqueira Leite (Small Editions, 2016).

Sandra Cinto’s Partiura is one of the artists’ books on view. As the title may suggest, the artist created a fantastical music score intertwined with her landscape drawings creating an experience of melodious movements. Another artist book is Sheryl Oppenheim’s Touching in which the viewer is invited to experience the joy of different papers, texture colors and formats. The pop-up book [2,3] by Taube Auerbach has six die-cut sculptures that unfold into a series of intricate forms, like pyramids, ziggurat, gems, arches and spheres. Inspired by the Argentine writer César Aria’s surreal story on the book “Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero”, The Valise is seven different interpretations of the concept of an adventurous journey. Lubaina Himid’s considers her Freedom Kangas to be a handbook and a guidebook for how to escape, how to survive and how to arrive in one piece. Most of the texts are by civil rights activists and each page is modeled on the design for an East African Kanga in which two pieces of cloth form a skirt and a top. In A Potential Space Juliana Cerqueira Leite addresses and challenges our preconceived ideas surrounding the representations of the female sex.
