This event has ended.

LMAKgallery presents Jeff Grant’s Parts together make. This will be his third solo exhibition with the gallery. On view will be a variety of works from 2012 to the present.

“A child creates, an adult creates, a god creates, and a manufacturing plant creates. Combining materials and parts builds objects and societies, even ideas. Sometimes these combinations can be of doubtful merit, and sometimes they can be destructive.” -Jeff Grant

The exhibition features drawings of ill-defined figures, assemblages of found materials and toys, combinations of photographs, and collages that include images of Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Creation.” Grant considers how history and memory contribute to the process of combining various elements into something recognizable, understandable, or relatable. He focuses on how, in his words: “Preexisting ideas contribute to our observations of facts. These ideas can enrich our understanding, but at times they misguide or conflict with our observations. I am interested in our presumptions about learning, and about forms of personal and social development.“

In Parts together make Grant destabilizes the conventional distinction between natural and artificial, the relevance of socially held beliefs about creation, and confronts what he refers to as: “the dubious notion of maturity.”

Jeff Grant (1975) lives and works between Berlin and New York. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and at Goldsmiths College in London in 2000. His work has been shown throughout Europe and the US: Danese/Corey Gallery, Galerie Speckstrasse in Hamburg, Germany, White Columns, Thomas Erben Gallery, Marianne Boesky Gallery, Whitespace, and Team Gallery.
