The CRG Gallery present Biblioteca, an exhibition of new textile constructions and sculptures by Brazilian born artist Tonico Lemos Auad (b. 1968). In Biblioteca, Auad engages themes chronicled throughout his practice: maritime, fluvial and urban ar- chitectural landscapes.
In Sandcastle, beige colored yarn and a myriad of crochet stitches create patterned rectangles that poetically suggest the fragility of a sandcastle. In Gale, beige, white, black and rust colored yarns are woven in an abstract design that implies two trees posed in a land- scape of lines. The warp and weft of the weaving process achieves a nervous line that approximates the trembling of trees under a forceful wind, suggested by the title. In Unruly Architecture, eight crochet vessels gingerly perch atop eight slim, hand-carved, wood- en plinths. The occasional glint of a polished bronze rod peeks through. This grouping, a visual metaphor of the whimsy of incon- gruous constructions, characterizes many of today’s cityscapes.
Auad first studied architecture in Brazil then went on to study art at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
