Grant implores unassuming objects to carry a certain gravity. He uses artificial plants, stock images, colored plastic, snapshots, and trash bags, which are common and generally on the edge of anyone’s attention. Such materials themselves create the atmosphere of a marginalized space. However, here the combination of these objects and images creates intensity, a sense that nothing is unintentional, a feeling that there may be something important.

In this installation of several discrete works, Grant’s process remains visible throughout. The materials are easily identifiable, and the forms are clearly delineated, giving the work truthfulness in its particulars. Yet this collection has an underlying tone of possible deception, of misleading one down an unknown path. In You must stand this while reading there., Grant strikes an awkward balance between boredom and excitement, between suggestive doubt and bland self-evidence.
