“Characters & Figures” Exhibition

LMAKprojects presents Characters & Figures a group exhibit presenting the work by Jonathan Ehrenberg, Brent Green, Chloe Piene and Silvia Russel. On view will be videos, drawings and sculptures, which deal with figures and characters in different scenarios. From the near baroque settings to fictional story telling that draws its inspiration from current societal events and embody the romantic, the poetic, the otherworldly and the realistic.
One of the two videos on view is Moth, a work by Jonathan Ehrenberg. The work is loosely based on The Man-Moth poem by Elizabeth Bishop, and follows three moth-like figures that are drawn to different sources of light. Ehrenberg’s work is stylized and contains surreal imagery and plot lines with a sense of emotional truth.
The other video is a stop-motion film by Brent Green titled Tinkerer Used to be a Trade in which he attempts to transcend the mundane and transform the world into a place of wonders. Green shares a deep connection with his character and wrings hope from the discarded and disheveled to patch together a unique personal Americana.
Gyre is the title of Chloe Piene’s charcoal drawing on black tissue paper, which comes from the “widening gyre” in Yeats’ poem The Second Coming. He says:
“The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold…”
The figure, made of Piene’s characteristic lines, reverberates between skeleton and flesh utilizing motifs that refer both to eroticism and death.
The extended drawings; Room 1, 2 and 3 by Silvia Russel are three dimensional objects which are inspired by real-life events that have recently happened to her or from stories she has heard, which she combines with imaginary or dreamlike occurences. In these works she addresses issues of alienation and disorientation.
