This event has ended.

Newspapers are still with us, but the public role of at least the printed version is greatly diminished. We have effectively left the era of the printed page in which newspapers covered the land like rain. Yet, as the world becomes increasingly virtual and digital, newspapers take on an expanded role in our imaginations.

This exhibition will focus on currently working artists whose engagement with the material and content of newspapers gives us a window on its changing status. All of the artists grew up with newspapers as quotidian objects. They are perhaps the last generation to do so. In a process that obliquely reflects earlier times, when the daily paper was passed from hand to hand, or news passed verbally from person to person, the task of curating this exhibition was passed from artist to artist. Adam Simon chose four artists based on his knowledge of their work with newspaper. They each chose one additional artist to join, and the process was repeated one more time, resulting in a total of 13 artists.

The work ranges from insertions into the layout of newspapers (Albee, Simon, Tomaselli) to discreet re-workings of the images that appear in newspapers (Newman, Thomas), to the use of newspaper as collage or as sculpture (Bui, Levy, St. John) to the creation of newspaper facsimiles (Lambert, Powhida, Smit). Finally, two videos document performances that examine how we absorb, read, eat the news (Laser, Pope.L)

The title, Burying the Lede, is a newspaper industry expression referring to a writer’s delay in revealing the main point of an article.
