The Jeffrey Leder Gallery presents an expansive exhibit of Arthur Hammer's bold and intuitive paintings. These works spanning 1989 - 2010, reflect his vision of places and objects at various points in his life.

Arthur reflects: "...I have always painted the places I have been and seen and the objects of my everyday life. This is the subject matter that connects me to the world and enriches my life and is, in a sense, autobiographical..."

This first solo exhibit of Arthur's work at Jeffrey Leder Gallery coincides with the gallery's relocation to this historic, brownstone setting - significant as well because this is where Arthur created most of the paintings in this exhibit.

"Arthur Hammer has a superb eye for urban and rural landscape, and seems drawn to everything around him, whether in the country or intensely urban New York City, where he lived for many years. A partisan of the great American modernist tradition, he translates his observations of both rural and city scenes into bold, somewhat stark, often compacted, freely brushed images that are instantly recognizable and emotionally evocative. The moods are diverse - including humor, loneliness, romance, nostalgia - and subtly complement his strong painterly technique.

A former actor, he came to painting relatively late in life and knew that he had found his true metier. He is a natural, painting with passion and the ability to distill the essence of a situation into a compelling painting. It should be noted that he is a remarkable figurative and portrait painter as well, atuned to the psychology of people and places"

Arthur was born in 1932 in Cleveland, spent most of his life in New York City. He is the recent recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Arthur's work is represented in the MoMA and Berkshire Museum permanent collections.
