This event has ended.

In this body of work, Wixted continues to expand the metaphoric range of his painting language and of his architecturally-based forms.
For many years, the forms in Wixted's paintings have been recognizable as buildings and cityscapes, influenced by the New York skyline and by his travels to places like Morocco, Italy, and Ireland. He is known for his formally elegant compositions, rich color handling, and expansive space. A dialogue with Modernist architecture and painting is also present, with echoes of Buckminster Fuller, Mondrian, and Oscar Niemeyer.
In Wixted's most recent paintings the scale of the objects and depth of field causes a more subjective reading. These paintings present themselves from a fixed vantage point, tethered to the ground plane while balancing a complex structure of shapes and colors. Rectangles, towers, and planes rise and overlap, creating volume while at the same time asserting their intrinsic flatness. Naturalistic shading is implied by color change as repeated forms undulate across the paintings surface.
