Danese opened in New York in 1997 with concurrent exhibitions – Dan Flavin’s iconic sculptures ‘Monuments’ to V. Tatlin, and rare drawings by Kazimir Malevich. Since then, the gallery has built a successful international reputation with a focus on the representation of contemporary artists and estates, which have included Emily Eveleth, April Gornik, Dimitri Hadzi, Jene Highstein, Bryan Hunt, Warren Isensee, Barry Le Va, Larry Poons, Julian Stanczak, and Anne Truitt. Interspersed with these shows have been several special exhibitions of twentieth century art that have particular significance within the context of the gallery’s program: Frank Stella, Mark di Suvero, Richard Serra, Larry Bell, Yves Klein, Sonia & Robert Delaunay, Ronald Bladen, Hamish Fulton, Josef Albers, Sean Scully, John Wesley, and Tom Wesselmann. The gallery has commissioned a number of catalogue essays from known critics and scholars including Donald Kuspit, Dave Hickey, Karen Lang, John Yau and Robert Pincus-Witten.

Danese has maintained a commitment to contemporary and modern master drawings. Exhibitions have included rare works on paper by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Yves Tanguy, Carlo Carrà, Salvador Dalí, Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Serra, Brice Marden, Robert Mangold and Chuck Close.

In August 2013, Danese will moved to a street level space at 511 West 22nd Street. We will inaugurate the new gallery with an exhibition of work by Susie MacMurray, opening September 12, 2013.
