David Zwirner was incorporated in 1992. The gallery opened in January, 1993 on Greene Street in the Soho section of New York, and moved to 525 West 19th Street (Chelsea) in September 2002. In September 2006, the gallery expanded to include exhibition spaces at 519 and 533 West 19th Street.

The focus of the gallery is to show the work of emerging artists from the United States and abroad.
