This event has ended.

52 Walker presents its third exhibition, govern me harder, featuring the work of Amsterdam-based artist Nora Turato (b. 1991). Throughout her oeuvre, which spans performance, video, graphic design, and wall work, Turato boldly deploys text in various permutations to alchemize the onslaught of language in our contemporary moment and to challenge the continued dominance of the modernist vernacular in visual culture. Debuting a series of enamel panels, a site-specific mural, and a custom typeface, govern me harder will be the artist’s first solo gallery exhibition in the United States and will follow her March 2022 presentation, pool 5, at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Nora Turato was born in 1991 in Zagreb, Croatia, and presently lives and works in Amsterdam. The artist received her BFA from Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, in 2013, and her MFA from Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem, the Netherlands, in 2016.

In 2022, Turato will present pool 5 at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, marking her first institutional solo exhibition in the United States. In 2021, Secession, Vienna, presented Nora Turato: ri-mEm-buhr THuh mUHn-ee. Previous solo exhibitions have taken place at LambdaLambdaLambda, Pristina, Kosovo (2021, 2018, and 2017); International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC), Ljubljana, Slovenia (2020); Galerie Gregor Staiger, Zurich (2020 and 2019); Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz (2019); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal (2019); UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund), Oslo (2018); and NAK (Neuer Aachener Kunstverein), Aachen, Germany (2017), among others.

The artist has given performances at venues such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2021); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2020); Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto, Portugal (2018); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2018); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2017); and the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015).

Work by the artist has been included in notable group exhibitions, such as INFORMATION (Today), Kunsthalle Basel (2021); Museum for Preventive Imagination, MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (2020); It’s Urgent!, Heartland Festival, Copenhagen (curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist; 2019); Manifesta 12, Palermo, Italy (2018); and Birth as Criterion, 32nd Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2017).

Turato is represented by Galerie Gregor Staiger, Zurich, and LambdaLambdaLambda, Pristina, Kosovo.
