James Turrell “After Effect”
Pace Gallery (540 W 25th St.)
This event has ended.
Pace presents a new Wedgework installation by James Turrell on the first floor of our flagship New York gallery.
Turrell is known worldwide for installations that explore perceptions of light and space. Pace’s presentation of works by Ad Reinhardt, curated by Turrell, will include the artist’s new Wedgework installation titled After Effect (2021). Turrell’s curatorial vision for the exhibition of Reinhardt’s paintings on the second floor centers enactments of lightness and darkness, and he has created a lighting concept to conjure new modes of viewing Reinhardt’s abstractions. Turrell is also currently the subject of a major retrospective at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts.
James Turrell has dedicated his practice to what he has deemed perceptual art, investigating the materiality of light. Influenced by the notion of pure feeling in pictorial art, Turrell’s earliest work focused on the dialectic between constructing light and painting with light, building on the sensorial experience of space, color, and perception.
