This event has ended.

Minoru Niizuma: Waterfall in Autumn Wind introduces Niizuma’s lifelong investigations into stones, featuring the artist’s signature works from the 1970s to the 1980s. The exhibition traces the trajectory and evolution of Niizuma’s works throughout his artistic career, highlighting the artist’s exploration of the relationship between man and nature.

We are pleased to release a video walkthrough of the exhibition. The artist’s son, Arata Niizuma, gives us a tour and discusses the journey of Niizuma’s practice—starting with his early works which are highly polished and symmetrical, and moving on to his later works which exemplify the juxtaposition between rough and polished surfaces.

Thomas Messer (1920–2013), the former Director of the Guggenheim Museum, described the chiseled channels of Niizuma’s work as “parallel rough grooves that run like furrows opened by a plough in the good earth.”

Minoru Niizuma: Waterfall in Autumn Wind highlights Niizuma’s evolving ability to strike a balance between the artist’s hand and the stone in its natural state.
