This event has ended.

Ed. Varie presents Sarah Hombach’s debut solo exhibition, Pleasure Platter.

Currently splitting time as an artist and fine-dining server, Hombach’s work is heavily informed by the intensity and absurdity of the New York City restaurant world. Her paintings star various service workers whose skill, joy, and anger are designed to go unrecognized at their workplaces. Hombach’s exaggerated figures are drooping, stretched, sumptuous, and tense; all reflecting the internal experience of her character’s bodies as they curl around their confining environments. Her more fantastical paintings and drawings invite the viewer to imagine a different vision of pleasure-taking entirely.

If we know that the act of preparing and sharing food can be an almost unadulteratedly lovely experience, has our concept of being “waited upon” lost this plot entirely? What does it mean that an industry designed purely for delight’s sake is so dependent on the exploitation of its assemblers? How much indignity can we taste in the food? ~Sarah Hombach, Artist Statement.

Sarah Hombach grew up Libertyville, IL and currently lives and paints in Brooklyn. She attended NYU’s Gallatin School, but remains a self-taught artist. Hombach has previously exhibited with Ed. Varie, Spring of 2021, and Fall of 2018. Pleasure Platter marks Hombach’s first solo exhibition of her career.
