Bridget Donahue presents new paintings by Satoshi Kojima, his second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Kojima’s languid figures are enmeshed in new scenarios constructed from vibrating patterns of pastel pink, gray, yellow and lavender. No two hues are the same and the hyper-flat paintings show barely a trace of the small brushstrokes that build these vast pictures. Kojima’s compositions utilize handmade arcs, diamonds, twisted grids and steps that offer shallow portals for his ambiguous characters in transit. One waits for a train, another is immersed in music, someone spirals in a necktie, someone else is tangled in a web; a mirrored man says ‘so long’ to nature.

Throughout the exhibition, undulating blue-and-white striped bands flow through these scenes to connect isolated figures and landscapes into an integrated experience. The paintings visualize Kojima’s personal sensations and make record of an awareness to a certain impression and the resulting sentiment.
Satoshi Kojima (b. 1979, Tokyo, Japan) is a painter currently based in Dusseldorf, Germany. Kojima attended Tokyo Zokei University and received his Master of Arts at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf, Germany in 2014. Previous solo exhibitions include Chaste as Ice, Pure as Snow, TRAMPS and Michael Werner, New York (2019); Delicate Boss, TRAMPS, London (2017); Satoshi Kojima, Bridget Donahue, New York (1017); Satoshi Kojima, TRAMPS London (2014) and Ohne Titel, Grau6, Dusseldorf (2010).
