“2021 Chubb Fellows” Exhibition
New York Academy of Art
This event has ended.
The New York Academy of Art presents the 2021 Chubb Fellows Exhibition, presenting works by the Academy’s three Chubb Postgraduate Fellows. Featuring drawings from Lydia Baker, paintings by Maud Madsen and prints by Luján Pérez Hernández, this exhibition marks the culmination of their year-long fellowships and the beginning of each artist’s promising career.
Each year, the Academy selects the top three graduates of its MFA program as Chubb Fellows. The fellowship is the highest honor the Academy bestows and has been sponsored by Chubb Insurance since 2015. The Fellows receive studio accommodations, a year-end exhibit and a generous stipend, and are also exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach through Chubb.
This year’s three Chubb Fellows, Lydia Baker (b. 1990, Virginia)) Maud Madsen (b. 1993, Canada) and Luján Pérez Hernández (b. 1991, Spain) all received an MFA at the Academy in 2020. Collectively, they have been awarded artist residencies in Ireland, Germany, Mississippi, West Virginia and New York and exhibited in group and solo shows in New York, Miami, Copenhagen and Puerto Rico.
Although the basis of their education is the same, each artist has developed a striking signature aesthetic, demonstrating the range of styles incubated at the Academy. Baker’s small-scale, exquisitely rendered drawings are peopled by nude figures joyfully dancing through the cosmos and fantastical imagined landscapes. Madsen’s psychedelically colored narrative paintings defamiliarize childhood games and adolescent rites of passage, holding the viewer rapt. Pérez Hernández’s black and white prints incorporate text, pairing unsettling scrawled aphorisms and drawings of flowers, vines and leaves.
