Monya Rowe Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by Emily Marie Miller titled If I cannot bend the Gods above, then I will move the Infernal regions.
This show features a series of small-and-large scale paintings of Influenced by Liz Greene’s book The Astrological Neptune and the Quest for Redemption (1996), Miller explores the Neptunian archetype’s desire to “return” to an imagined Paradise, where all of our needs are met and there are no boundaries. The characters in this new work are more self-aware of these psychological undertones and the desire for Paradise. Set in theaters, and under full moons, they struggle to free themselves through performing, self-caring, and sometimes self-harming, exhibiting to the viewer several realities at once and relinquishing an idealized version of the self.

Miller uses fairytales or storytelling as a vehicle for reflection on power dynamics and Ownership. The ballet Giselle and the 1948 technicolor film The Red Shoes are also strong influences. Through the lens of the feminine experience, Miller provides a narrative about the human existence in all its’ complexity and continuous transformation. This exhibition shows Miller introducing vivid colors to heighten this experience and illuminate the “stage” where these mysterious, unidentifiable, and flawed, heroines exist.
Emily Marie Miller (b. 1991, St. Petersburg, FL) received a BFA from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. Her work has recently been exhibited at Unit Gallery, London; 0.0 Gallery, LA; Paul Kasmin Gallery, NY, curated by Yvonne Force; and Monya Rowe Gallery, NY. Miller lives and works in the Hudson Valley, NY.
