This event has ended.

Mast Books presents Hand to Hand, a solo exhibition of new works by Charlotte de Mezamat.

The exhibition consists of a series of books curated by the artist, each of which has had its dust-jacket replaced by a unique work-on-paper. Mezamat describes these books as environments, locations she has spent time in. Motifs and impressions were drawn from the interiors of each book, focusing on recurring forms across the selection; threads, ropes and nets are brought to the surface.

Each of the books combines black & white photographic imagery with text and were published between 1950 and 1983. Although they can not be considered photo-books in the modern sense; they sit at the crossroads of documentary and story-telling, books which aim to share a way-of-life with the wider world.

Monotype - the technique used to create the covers - is strictly speaking a printing process, albeit one closer to painting in that it only creates one print per run. Inks are painted onto glass, paper is then pressed into the surface to reveal the image.

A shared color pallet invites a dialogue between the otherwise unrelated books wrapped in their new covers, binding them together. They become a series of related titles, a group of associated environments, a network of entangled terrains to visit.

Charlotte de Mezamat, originally from Paris, France, is an artist living and working in New York.
