Gallery Henoch presents REFLECTIONS, a solo exhibition of paintings by Richard Combes.

Quiet Manhattan puddles become networks of color and texture in the new oil paintings by Richard Combes. Timeworn streets make fertile subject matter for an artist whose painted surfaces are rich in detail. In each of his compositions, the linear structure of buildings strikes a contrast to the organic motion of pooled water. The series plays on the meaning of ‘reflection’ as an optical device. In the middle of a street, the water reflects downward, yet it reveals the sky and the inverted tops of buildings, enhancing the illusion of a city that exists beyond the picture plane.

Born in Manchester in 1963, Combes received his training in architecture from the University of Liverpool, England. After a short time in professional practice, he moved to New York to study painting at the New York Academy of Art. In 2004, he was inducted into the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London and has received numerous awards and honors. He has three times been exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery of London as part of the BP Portrait Award, and has been the focus of a solo show at the Bassetlaw Museum, Nottinghamshire, England.
