Andrew Kreps Gallery presents footnotes and headlines, a group exhibition at 22 Cortlandt Alley, organized in collaboration with the Corita Art Center, Los Angeles.

The exhibition takes its title from Kent’s 1967 publication of the same name, which Marshall McLuhan described after its release as “a new form of book…an x-ray of human thought and social situations.” Including a multi-generational group of artists, with works spanning from the 1960s to the present, the exhibition looks at the diverse ways in which artists have incorporated mass media and popular culture in their work as a response to the social environment in which their work is made. Appropriating imagery and text from newspapers, magazines, television, and the internet, the artists included employ divergent strategies to interact with, abstract, and critique the predominant cultural narratives of their time.
