This event has ended.

High Noon presents Lindsay Walt’s second exhibition with the gallery, Into Air. Walt’s recent paintings combine architectonic form with luminous color as a way of exploring the confluence of matter with the ethereal. Monumental geometric forms stack and balance in dialogue creating oscillating planes of color. Form functions as both object and environment, conveying a geological unfolding.

Walt’s paintings capture a world of transformative phenomena, alluding to the sublime found in nature. In Echo, two blue diamonds, like fragments of sky, converge at the same point emitting a soft plume of white— a small action made large, suggesting a momentary celestial event. One Square Inch of Silence is named after the research project on silence in Olympic National Park, possibly the quietest place in the United States. These works exist somewhere between the realm of Stanley Kubrick and Frederic Edwin Church, referencing tropes of visionary film and Romanticism, while evoking the wonder of the natural world.

The luminosity of the paintings reinforces the central drama of Walt’s work where weight and buoyancy battle to establish an unsettled dynamic alliance. This tension is highlighted by the earth/air duality of color and the heightened palette of Quinacridone violet, Prussian blue, and Indian yellow. Layers of transparent and semi-transparent oil glazes create depth and radiance by shifting tonal and temperature color. In both large and small work, Walt’s monolithic scale evokes a phantasmagoric view of implied motion where color and repeating forms suggest the possibility of infinite space— a borderland where solid melts into air.

Concurrent with the exhibition is Walt’s site-specific installation, A Touch of Color, on view at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Building 77. Installed in a large window facing the East River, the collaged image on glass (19’ x 14’) transforms throughout the day with its combination of imagined space and reflected sights of the Yard.

Lindsay Walt received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA from The Art Institute of Chicago. Additionally, she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and was awarded a MacDowell Fellowship. Her paintings have been extensively exhibited in the United States. Her work is included many prominent private and public collections such as the U.S. Embassy in Djibouti, (ART in Embassies), Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Amerada Hess, Chase Manhattan Bank, Long Island Jewish Children’s Hospital, New York Public Library, Progressive Insurance Company, Prudential Insurance Company, Skowhegan School of Painting, and Sculpture and Yale University of Art.
