While the concept of touch has been explored in many of the creative responses to this moment, breath remains largely neglected despite the critical role it has played in all of this year’s major events. At this juncture, our breath and communication have been stifled, contained, and driven to adapt. Albeit one of the most innate acts of life for both humans and nature alike, breathing has suddenly become unnatural and fear-inducing. No longer serving as a universal connector in the way it did before, it has, instead, transformed into an individual process that has the potential to harm if made communal. Through artworks that engage with ideas of contamination, constraint, pause, interiority, reflection, and longing, this exhibition poetically evokes the concept of breath within the context of this extraordinary time.
