This event has ended.

The Hole presents one fantastic piece by Matthew Stone in our new storefront gallery. This artwork, “Together”, was made in 2019 and completed earlier this year. The artist says, “I did not make the piece with this movement in mind and do not feel that it is of more relevance now than before. It is and has been my intention to create images that show people together and at ease with each other. That togetherness is a part of the reality I see around me, but also a part of a vision I hold for a future that is defined by collective healing, which includes my own transformation.”

This large-scale figurative work is made through an innovative technique for painting the figure developed by the artist over the past few years. Paint marks are created on glass and scanned on top and underneath to create a 3D paint gesture. Hundreds of these marks are compiled in 3D programs to create the composition. Stretched and shaped, wrapping around a muscle or transparently layered to light up a volume, these digitized brush strokes are used like an oil painter would to form not just figures but draperies, environments and pure painterly exuberance.
