The exhibition Shadows of Existence presents, for the first time in New York, an overview of important groups of work by eminent Korean artist Kwak Nam Sin. In total 19 different works, executed in a variety of different two-dimensional media, form one comprehensive singular installation. While many of the exhibited works were created in the past few years, the exhibition also presents an earlier, seminal mixed media work from 2012 entitled Silhouette Puzzle and another work from 2004 called Kalpa. The two works illustrate Kwak’s unique technique of combining different media including spray paint, paraffin, and beeswax.
What unites these seemingly diverse works is his ongoing reflection on human existence and the ambiguity of social interactions. In his very own way, Kwak tells us stories that make us connect with our inner self. This unique interaction with the viewer ultimately completes the work at large, creating a mystical bond in the form of an ostensibly minimal artistic gesture. It is as if we are, for once, able to capture a moment of the shadow of our suspended existence.
Born in 1953 in Seoul Korea, Kwak Nam Sin graduated from the College of Fine Art, Hongik University and received Diplome from the Printmaking Department, Ecole National Superieur des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His numerous solo and group exhibitions include the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, Coreana Museum of Art and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art. He currently holds the position of Honorary Professor at the School of Visual Art, Korea National University of Arts.
