Amos Eno Gallery presents two concurrent exhibitions: Andre Rubin, “Downfall: The Going Under”and Hildegard Hsieh Holman, “The Many Faces of Quarantine,” two solo exhibitions presented in tandem with new works by artists Andre Rubin and Hildegard Hsieh Holman.
“Up” and “down” are palpable concepts in our everyday lives. When depicted in artworks, they form visual metaphors communicating our moral judgments about history, the state of the world and our future. During times of turmoil, these themes loom even larger than usual. In Andre Rubin, Downfall: The Going Under, the artist presents collages and drawings engaging with the Covid-19 lockdown. These works explore feelings of social isolation and thoughts about societal stasis and decline.
Hildegard Hsieh Holman, Rubin’s sister, was recently in quarantine in Auckland, New Zealand on her way back to that country from the United States. During her 14 days isolated in a hotel room, she created the works for Hildegard Hsieh Holman: The Many Faces of Quarantine. Under very specific spatial, lighting and timing constraints, Holman experimented with face paint, creating a series of intimate self-portraits - at least one for each day in isolation. These revealing self-portraits express a panoply of changing inner emotional states.
Andre Rubin is a Philadelphia-based collage artist. He fabricates both small and oversize collages from found images and archival materials. Stylistically, his artworks are concise, bold, colorful and delineated in the tradition of pop art, political posters and advertisements. Thematically, his work deals with classical art, philosophy and cosmology. Rubin’s work has been in shows specifically about climate change, feminism, postmodernism, the future and the Zeitgeist. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including such venues as Roadshow at the ArtVenice Biennale 3, CICA Museum in South Korea, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. In 2017, he was a Leap Public Art Program speaker in NYC. Rubin is a member of the Amos Eno Gallery. He holds philosophy degrees from Harvard and Columbia.
Hildegard Hsieh Holman is a self-taught artist who currently lives in New Zealand and works as a Specialist in Emergency Medicine. Raised in the Midwestern United States, she was first exposed to face painting in high school theater. She holds a BA in Chemistry from Brown University and completed her medical studies on the East Coast. After almost 25 years in South Carolina, she and her husband packed up for a year to work in New Zealand and are still there. In South Carolina she was involved in children’s theater designing and creating costumes for many productions, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Seussical, Peter Pan and Mulan. Face painting was an integral part of the costumes. She is also an avid photographer.
