This event has ended.

Neumann Wolfson Art presents Avec le goût, a solo show of new works by French artist Louis Granet (b. 1991, Bordeaux; lives and works in Paris). The phrase “Avec le goût” is grammatically incorrect in French. The correct way to write this expression is “Avec du goût,” which translates to “having good taste”. Granet makes this phrase purposely awkward to poke fun at notions of taste and erudition in music, fashion and the art world.

Granet belongs to the tradition of comic book illustration, Pop Art, and a hybrid of various forms of abstraction such as Rayanism, Color Field and Abstract Expressionism. He appropriates high and low imagery to question notions of accepted bourgeois taste. He merges iconic cartoon characters with patterns from high fashion scarves in his signature style of layered, “broken plane” paintings. The scarf imagery also allows him to continue the evolution of his black line gestures, which are inspired by his background in graphic arts and comic book illustration. Each work is energetic and dynamic, forefronting unconventional, unexpected color combinations. The relationship between line, color and presents disorients viewers and destabilizes a fixed point of view.

Although these works are critical of notions of taste, the use of bright color and imagery from childhood suggest an overall optimistic worldview. Granet describes the vibrant, large scale works as “smiles…good vibes for a fantasy life.”
