This event has ended.

Kentler International Drawing Space present Science of the Word, a multi-media drawing installation by Brooklyn-based artist Mildred Beltré.

The exhibition reflects Beltré’s longtime interest in social justice, politics and the power of language. Her text-based works examine the impact of social movements on individual relationships and the intimate spaces of daily life. Through the language of quilting and cross-stitch, she references the domestic sphere and the quiet, incremental ways that social changes take hold in the “home and the heart” as well as in the street.

Beltré employs grid patterns and vibrant colors to abstract and obfuscate the found and original text in her large-scale works, resulting in a “homemade” pixilation that muddles their message. In this way she plays with notions of visibility and transformation. The exhibition’s title refers to a sociological concept that humans are shaped by both genetic and cultural codes, and that our use of language is a key component to our nature and power structures. Science of the Word includes new and recent drawings, prints on paper, textile and assemblage.

Essays by Ujju Aggarwal and James Scheuren accompany the exhibition.
