This event has ended.

Curated by Alice Mizrachi, Evolution chronicles the progression of women artists with roots in graffiti, street art and/or hip hop culture who have flourished across decades. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to view the work of a highly celebrated group of women artists in one venue.

Participating artists include: legends Lady Pink and Martha Cooper; New York mainstays Indie 184, Queen Andrea, Erotica and Jenevieve; pioneers Jane Dickson and Janette Beckman; international icons Miss Van (France), Vexta (Australia), Imagine (Nepal), Pau Quintanajornet (Chile/Germany) and Herakut (Germany); Chicana artist Nani Chacon (Dine/ Navajo) /; photographer/writer Diana McClure and interdisciplinary artist Lady K-Fever; community-based artist Sarah C. Rutherford (Rochester, NY); and, Swoon.

The journey from dangerous and frowned-upon street art to a high-demand marketplace for artists of their stature has been multi-faceted and hard won by many of these artists. Empowered by communal and individual pursuits, as well as challenges and transformations, their work reveals an evolution in style and substance, along with a continued reverence for the vibrant subculture from which they come.

The exhibition includes sculpture, painting, mixed media, and photography as well as each artist’s thoughts on the meaning of Evolution in their own lives. Several of the artists have collaborated on projects and exhibitions over many years, at home and abroad, developing a sense of community, support and camaraderie. The exhibition will be documented in a catalog, available at the Andrew Freedman Home.
