“Fever Lure” Exhibition

Selenas Mountain presents Fever Lure, an exhibition featuring three New York based artists exploring concepts of idolatry, fandom, and pop culture. This exhibition presents the work of Christina Yuna Ko, Shana Sadeghi-Ray and Emma Stern, all of whom tap into the collective unconscious of female representation and identity latently embedded in our digitally mediated modern world.
The impact of the internet, entertainment, fandom and social media shapes our relationships and our lives, for better or worse. The artworks in this exhibition show how the physical and the virtual have become symbiotic. One can no longer exist without the other and this duality is now an embedded reality of the human condition.
With a striking 90s infused color palette, the imagery in Christina Yuna Ko’s paintings borrow from cute culture and Anime. Tropes of teen angst and ennui are doused in a vaporwave fluorescence. Ko’s confectionary execution combines her personal history and the aesthetic of East Asia.
Shana Sadeghi-Ray exhibits a curated installation of hand-made and found NBA objects. Her approach of assemblage collections create blurred categories of treasured accumulating and idiosyncratic fandom.
Emma Stern’s studio process begins with creating virtual 3D models which she then translates to a hyperreal painted canvas. The painted surface becomes a vessel for the simulated figure, a material lens into an immaterial corporeal realm. The result is a kind of contemporary portraiture made possible by new technologies, where erotically-charged subjects are captured in familiar poses that reference selfie culture and online displays of female sexuality.
Christina Yuna Ko is a Korean American artist living and working in Queens, NY. She received her BFA from Cornell University in 2013 and has since then shown her work in Los Angeles, CA, Washington D.C., and in around New York City. Ko has participated in exhibitions in Public Address Gallery, the Korean Cultural Center, the Independent Art Book Fair, and Selena Gallery. Her work has also been featured in the Washington Post, Hiss Magazine and the online publication, Ballpit Magazine.
Shana Sadeghi-Ray is a multimedia artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores the concept of worship, ever evolving from topics of celebrity to religion and now into her current subject matter and own personal obsession - basketball and the NBA. Drawing from her fascination of fandom culture, she is able to to apply her unique point of view, utilizing humor and self-awareness to create a collection fan memorabilia. Noticing how it is possible to incorporate what is idolized into everyday life, brings a closer connection between the admirer and the revered.
Emma Stern combines a deep commitment to traditional painting with an interest in digital media to explore notions of identity in the growing community of avatars and virtual selves. Of particular interest is how these proxies manifest as authentic self-expressions particularly for young women, and for people who represent themselves as young women online. By using virtual 3d models as subjects, she aims to refresh the aesthetics of portraiture and question how our embodiment of these technological surrogates transforms, idealizes, and modifies our ‘original’ identity.
Emma Stern received a BFA with honors from Pratt Institute’s School of Painting in 2014. She has exhibited her work on national and international platforms including VRWorld NYC, Castor Gallery (NYC), 0-0.LA (CA), and Arebyte Gallery, UK. She is the co-curator of Post Vision, a global digital art platform, and her work was recently included in issue 4 of the the bi-annual anthology ‘Is This It?’. She lives and works in New York City.
