Tony Cokes and Oscar Murillo “Collision/Coalition”
The Shed
This event has ended.
Level 4 Gallery
Collision/Coalition brings together distinct commissions with intersecting themes by artists Tony Cokes and Oscar Murillo. Varied in medium and approach, the commissions explore the role of art in the interaction of opposing social, cultural, and political forces. An exploration of the relationship between artist, studio, and urban development, Cokes’s work positions pop music and other appropriated materials in a new, confrontational context. Murillo, known for exploring the paradox of contemporary globalization—constant exchange, yet increasing displacement—is creating new work, taking Diego Rivera’s famed, destroyed murals at Rockefeller Center as his starting point.
In tandem with Collision/Coalition, The Shed has commissioned a documentary film by Yanina Valdivieso and Vanessa Bergonzoli about Beatriz González, one of Colombia’s most celebrated artists, and her monumental public artwork Auras Anónimas. Screenings of Beatriz González: A Documentary begin in The Shed’s Level 4 Gallery on July 31 and continue daily (except Mondays) through August 25.
Collision/Coalition is organized by Emma Enderby, Senior Curator, with Adeze Wilford, Curatorial Assistant.
