This event has ended.

Amos Eno Gallery presents Perpetual Becoming, a solo exhibition of new works by Samantha Jones.

Through a combination of objects and site-specific video installation, Perpetual Becoming investigates the psychological, perceptual, and spiritual limits of the human experience, as evidenced in the relationship to time as material. The exhibition encourages a time-based experience in the gallery.

Jones’s work occurs via a continuum where materials, time, forms, concepts, the maker and the made are all part of the same fabric, inextricably embedded into one another. Her forms are artifacts of becoming; unfinished, permeated, unraveling, and disintegrating as they are suspended in a moment of passage from one dimension to the next. The eye is unsettled, and attention is diverted from subject and object - evoking Simone Weil’s idea that attention alone, “in which the ‘I’ disappears” is what is required.

The work then functions as does the body; a permeable vessel and conduit between the realms of self and other. These invitations to seek and surrender to something beyond the self become catalysts for new growth, allowing artist and viewer to undermine established modes of creation and perception in favor of more careful ways of being.

Samantha Jones received her MFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, her BFA from the University of Maine at Orono, and her BA from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. She is currently pursuing a PhD via the Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Art in Portland, ME. Jones is an assistant professor of Art at the Honors College at the University of Maine in Orono and has participated in various residencies including the Vermont Studio Center and Pinea Linea De Costa in Spain. She currently lives on the coast of Maine and exhibits her work throughout New England, Philadelphia, New York, and abroad.
