Filo Sofi Arts presents Iris Scott’s solo exhibition, Ritual in Pairing. Curated by Gabrielle Aruta, the exhibition serves as a celebration of nature’s unequivocal beauty and as an exploration of behavioral instinct, the laws of attraction, and the process through which human beings construct their own identities from their surrounding environment.

Ritual in Pairing will be on view at the High Line Nine through May 30th. Iris adorns her first work of wearable art during the live performance on May 17th, and the closing reception on Thursday, May 30th will feature a panel discussion with Anthony Haden Guest and Coco Dolle, as well as the debut NYC performance of Desi drag queen MangHoe Lassi.

We are all works in progress – self-created artworks that long for acceptance. Ritual in Pairing explores the profound connection between personal identity and pairing rituals found in the natural world. In pairing rituals, nature flaunts its beauty in displays that exceed their usefulness and overflow with exuberant, jaw-dropping spectacle. In creating our own identities, human beings exhibit this same ardor and joy tempered only by the vulnerability we feel when we put ourselves out there in a hopeful bid for acceptance.

Taking a cue from the peacock, the works of Ritual in Pairing embody a joyous declaration of self-assertion and euphoria. Reconfiguring the past into a surreal, dream-like promise for the future, we are challenged to engage in a new way of existence. The work takes on a decidedly environmentalist stance, reminding viewers what is at stake. Each composite work dwells in possibility, conjured up by reimagining humanity’s place in nature.

Reveling in beauty, color and ingenuity, Ritual in Pairing is an invitation to take another look at the natural world so that we might recover a piece of ourselves. In the grand pairing between humanity and nature, we are reminded that nature is worth fighting for.
