This event has ended.

In Grounding, artist Marilyn Banner continues her exploration of the earth’s forms and energies through the rich medium of encaustic. Here she delves more deeply into the specific qualities of substance, into the layered textures and solidity of ancient rock and stone, and into the soft light and color of blossoms.

Banner works with encaustic – a mixture of pigment, beeswax, and damar resin - which is used with heat. The pigmented wax is built up in layers, carved into, and manipulated to mimic the dense textures and weathering of stone, or layered to create the translucence of flower petals. Some of her paintings look much like what she sees, but always with a focus on the subject matter’s abstract qualities. Others are entirely abstract, inspired by, and resulting from, her ability to fully internalize and integrate the energies, the spiritual qualities, of what she sees and is compelled to share in paint.

“I have always wanted to share what moves me deeply, what I experience in nature for which I have no words. Painting is my way.”

Marilyn Banner has exhibited her mixed media work in over 30 solo and 100 group shows across the US and abroad. Her work is in numerous private and public collections including Hebrew Union College NYC and the Embassy of Costa Rica in Washington DC. Banner is the recipient of ten residency fellowships to the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and was awarded a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation VCCA Creative Fellows Grant. Her work was featured in Encaustic Art in the 21st Century by Anne Lee and E. Ashley Rooney. Grounding is the artist’s eighth solo show at Ceres Gallery.
