This event has ended.

Bowery Gallery presents recent work by Thaddeus Radell, whose darkly luminous paintings evoke journeys through subconscious landscapes.
From the artist’s richly layered surfaces – broadly trowelled in places, elsewhere delicately incised – emerge visions of the river Acheron and the ferryman Charon, who in Dante’s Inferno transports souls to the underworld. Elements within these figure compositions – whether humans, horses or boats – appear and disappear within the atmospheric depths, while bits of embedded burlap suggest a ragged dimension beyond paint.

The exhibition includes a number of small portraits, some attached atop the largest paintings. While inspired by early Renaissance panels, they plumb inner states connecting all eras.
