Central to Cara Barer’s artistic practice, is the manipulation and transformation of abandoned and obsolete books. Through a labor-intensive process of coiling, crumpling, intervention with paint, ink and pencil; the artist shapes and molds literary artifacts, prior to their final presentation as stunning, large-scale photographs.
“The worst disaster that Houston has ever experienced came in the form of Hurricane Harvey in the fall of 2017. … I was offered two books of a very personal nature from friends that lost their entire home. I took them in the hope that I could make something meaningful and beautiful from the remains of a disaster. After the Flood and Palimpsest are the two images that I created from the remnants of those books”.—Cara Barer
More recently, Barer has experimented with constructing her own handmade artist books, made from a variety of accumulated materials—maps, security envelopes, mail order catalog images. This new direction in her practice has now progressed to incorporate the binding of her own travel photographs, made whilst on extensive travels abroad. These highly personal books, are subsequently metamorphosed into her signature staged photographs.
