This event has ended.

Dena Schutzer’s third solo show at Bowery includes paintings and etchings that highlight the embrace of life in a Yonkers laundromat – what the artist calls “the intimate displays of the basic struggle to maintain order and dignity.” Other paintings reflect her interest in quiet visual excitements of daily life: a man in a park resting his head on a soda bottle, a mother’s tired, slightly impatient carrying of a child, the rhythmic blue shapes of a group of policemen on break.

In an essay for the exhibition catalog, Simon Carr writes, “The genius of these paintings is their Janus-like ability to face both the seen and the viewer, to bring us close to apparently mundane events, then, turning to us, reveal them as profoundly structured.”
