“Illusion of Spontaneity: Angel’s Share” Exhibition

Amos Eno Gallery presents Illusion of Spontaneity; Angel’s Share, a three-person exhibition featuring recent works by Young Gi Tina Han, Sonomi Kobayashi, Miyuki Hyodo.

The term ‘Angel’s Share’ means the amount of distilled spirits lost to evaporation from the barrel or cask into the air as the whiskey ages.

In this show, Young Gi Tina Han presents a new body of her works where the chemical mélange of alcohol and pigment creates an accidental expression, giving a hint of evaporating into heaven with her inspiration by the term ‘Angel’s Share’. Learning from what she’s doing unconsciously, layering each spontaneous gesture; spilling, wiping out, scrubbing raw canvas, Han discovers what is ‘given’ or ‘meant to happen’ after her spontaneous actions. Then, she adds illumination in the form of text as she interprets her discovery. Similar to the way 2% of alcohol evaporates into air as the ‘Angel’s Share’, the artist takes her share, mapping her intuitive process to discover what is ultimately meant to be made.

Sonomi Kobayashi presents her recent alcohol-ink-based installations and paintings. They are painted with alcohol-ink on Yupo paper and synthetic vellum that is then cut and collaged. By dropping and moving the ink very carefully before drying, Kobayashi works to create the spontaneous beauty of life that is full of accidents and happenstance. According to Kobayashi, ‘our lives are always spontaneous and often not how we planned, yet later you realize everything is perfect.’

Miyuki Hyodo presents edible art with the theme of ‘Angel’s Share’ in Wagashi, a Japanese Confectionary art.

Young Gi Han (aka Tina Han) was born and grew up in South Korea. The artist currently lives and works in New York. She holds MFA in Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts, New York, and her work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, and Seoul; Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum; The Rediscovery of Diaspora (2017), Amos Eno Gallery; Chromacide (2017), Brooklyn Art Cluster gallery(2017); Universal Vessels, Where Nature Ends, Mist Gallery; Re Run(2016), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts; Palimpsest (2014), New York, Interstate Project Gallery; Group Velocity (2013), New York, Soap Box Gallery; Drawn (2014), Brooklyn, Artifact Gallery; Close Quarters (2013), Blue Mountain Gallery; The National Juried Exhibition (2013), Select Art Fair (2012), Miami. She received a fellowship from Contemporary Artists Center, Troy, New York.

Sonomi Kobayashi, born and raised in Japan, is a New York-based painter and print-maker who is interested in science, physics, stars, nature, and spirituality. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Japan, and Europe, including Williamsburg Art & Historical Center (NYC), Lesley Heller Workspace (NYC), Gitana Rosa Gallery (NYC), Ground Floor Gallery (NYC), Galerie ARTAe, (Leipzig Germany), The National Art Center Museum (Tokyo, Japan), Galerie La (Tokyo, Japan), and art fairs including, Affordable Art Fair (NYC), artMRKT Hamptons (Bridgehampton, NY), TEASE Art Fair (Cologne, Germany), C.A.R. Art fair (Essen Germany), POP OUT : Warehouse 9 (Copenhagen, Denmark). She received Will Barnet Grant in Printmaking in 2013, participated in residencies at MASS MoCA (MA), Vermont Studio Center (VT), ASL Vytlacil Campus (NY), and Cat’Art Contemporary Art Centre (France). Her current studio is in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY.

Miyuki Hyodo was born in Nagoya, Japan 1986. Her dream is to share the taste of fresh Wagashi (Japanese confections) with people around the world. After training in a Japanese confectionery in Nagoya, she moved to New York in 2012. In New York, She provides wagashi for events and private party as a freelance confectioner. Her collaboration work with visual artists has been presented by Infinito Gallery; Closing Party reception of Evidence of Existence by Sequoyah Aono (2016), New York City, Usagi Gallery; Edible Art Performance with Shu Ohno (2017), Brooklyn, NY.
