Calico presents Field for Ballads. This is the first of several exhibitions chosen from the gallery’s 2017 “Call for Curatorial Proposals”. Local artist and curator, Frank Schellace, has organized this thoughtful pairing of paintings and writings by two Brooklyn-based artists, Hannah Hill and Hannah Aizenman. Please join us on March 2nd, 7-9pm, for the opening reception.

Field for Ballads is an exhibition that will offer both paintings and poems from two Alabama-born artists currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Their work displays their inheritance of Southern idiom, haunts of folklore, philosophy, violence, and identity, cultivated by their experiences growing up in the South. On view will be large stretched oil paintings by Hannah Hill and written works by Hannah Aizenman. Hill’s traditionally exhibited paintings will be complemented by Aizenman’s poems, represented as an installation. Hill and Aizenman’s work will also make up a limited edition booklet that will be on view and available for purchase.

Frank Schellace is an independent curator and outreach coordinator. He assisted in organizing the exhibition Bhillboards (2009) at the Andy Warhol Factory, 76 Wooster Street, and was the co curator of All Arts Show (2011-2013) at the Sapphire Lounge, 249 Eldridge Street. Additionally he has traveled to Galleries in Cambodia and Vietnam offering international correspondence and gifting small works by Artist Ewelina Bochenska M.F.A. including trips to Meta House (Phnom Penh) Couleurs D'asie Gallery (Hoi An) Salon Art Vietnam (Hanoi) and Nha San Collective (Hanoi).
