Curator: Jennifer Bacon

Five Myles presents the solo exhibition of Vittoria Chierici: The Philosophers Clothes, curated by Jennifer Bacon. The artist presents large paintings she has dedicated to Raphael’s famous fresco School of Athens.

After intense study of the fresco Vittoria Chierici interprets the well-known historical characters painted by Raphael, their imagined conversations and disputes in her new series The Philosophers’ Clothes.

The philosophers and mathematicians represented in the original fresco – commissioned by Pope Julius II and located in the Vatican – range from 600 BC until 1100AD and cover a geographic area from Athens, Alexandria, Cordoba and ancient Persia.

In Cierici’s paintings their tunics turn into a composition of color and shapes that, isolated, become abstract. In her interpretation these shapes express the posture and even the gestures of the characters in the fresco.

The fresco will be projected in the gallery for the viewer to enjoy and to understand Vittoria Chierici work. In each of her paintings she shows aspects of Raphael’s fresco paired down to the basics of color and shape. The canvases are unframed and bring this exhibition oddly back into the time of Raphael.
