This event has ended.
Adrianne Lobel’s third exhibition with Bowery features large canvases reworked from a series of plein air studies she produced last summer in mobile home parks. The artist’s most recent work reflects a new intensity of scaled-up, hard edged forms, with heightened colors conjuring space and light.
Reviewing Lobel’s 2017 exhibition at Carter Burden Gallery, David Cohen wrote in artcritical.com of her testing of “the boundaries between dejection and joy”:
Tackling the banality of such delights as storage units, tract housing, parking lots and the like—the suburban sublime—painter (and former set designer) Adrianne Lobel occupies a hybrid aesthetic space somewhere between realist melancholy and utopian abstraction that’s as unsettling and ambiguous as the environment with which she contends.
