This event has ended.

Calico presents new works by three local artists: Steph Becker, Kate Nielsen, and Libby VanderPloeg. Illustration is the common thread among the three, yet each artist employs a different degree of that in their process. Please join us on April 28th for the opening reception which will coincide with Greenpoint Gallery Night - a twice-a-year event highlighting the varied exhibition spaces around the neighborhood.

Steph Becker is a Brooklyn based artist working in painting, illustration, ceramics, and textiles. Influenced primarily by folk art, she employs a subdued color palette and simplified forms to explore the ordinary. Her work hones in on animals, nature, common objects and activities, but the distinctness of her hand makes the normal seem unique. Becker received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Kate Nielsen is a Brooklyn based artist, originally from Reno, NV. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and is inspired by textures found in everyday life and outsider art. Her process involves building up layers of acrylic paint that are peeled, cut, and reincorporated into new forms. Her paintings are meditations on the buildup of layers, harnessing complexity, and finding simplicity within chaos. She is interested in human nature, ritual, and memory, and makes both narrative-based and abstract paintings. Her work often has to do with our collective urge to dominate the natural world and the recognition of Nature as feral.

Libby VanderPloeg is a Brooklyn based artist and illustrator. Working with ink, watercolor, and cut paper, she creates imaginative vignettes that examine her relationship with feminine culture, community, and daydreamy pursuits of happiness. VanderPloeg’s paintings and collages combine her love of drawing and painting with her appreciation of and adherence to structured design.
