Van Der Plas Gallery

This event has ended.

As summer winds down, still more artists and viewers are flocking to Van der Plas gallery for the latest installation of All Art +. This iteration brings some new faces from the wilds of Brooklyn, and a collaborator to help Adriaan Van der Plas put it all together. Joe Bloch is a creative director, artist, gallerist, promoter, magazine publisher, and curator who has already introduced the multinational painter Alejandro Caiazza. Bloch is the founder of the Creative Bloch collective in DUMBO and the publisher of its new magazine, and he’s bringing more of his Brooklyn regulars to mix it up with gallery stalwarts.

Bloch, like Van der Plas, is wary about categorizing artists. He has a point: applying nonce terms to new work can produce embarrassing subtexts. Remember Neo Geo? Remember Energism? Instead, Bloch says, the embrace of the small-time ethic is key. “We’re happy to be where we are,” he says; art-world politics and (his word) bullshit are optional. “We try to find situations where there’s less of it,” he says, and so, on Wednesday night, students will be rubbing shoulders with old hands, and Van Der Plas artists, as always, will keep things hopping.

Old things may be new again, but wild things are never tame. Watch this space, as they say. Whole schools are being built on people who believe in one another and feed their support into a roving collective. For now, this is where they call home.
