Y Gallery presents “Be My Memory,” the first exhibition in New York dedicated fully to Peruvian contemporary artists, curated by Miguel A. Lopez. Lopez is recipient of the 2016 Independent Vision Curatorial Award given by ICI (Independent Curators International).
The works that are gathered here, produced by artists from different generations, propose ways of representing the personal and social memory of a country marked by turbulent political processes. From intimate, subjective reviews of biographical histories, appropriations of images circulated in the mass media, critical re-readings of masculinity and of political violence from the perspectives of gender and sexuality, to explorations of bodies that try to forget what they are in order to imagine other ways of moving or existing. These works invoke other forms of getting to know what has been lived, as if it were possible to speak to the past in order to suddenly fill it with new sensations that recodify all of its meanings.
Miguel A. López (Lima, 1983) is a writer, researcher and Chief Curator of TEOR/éTica and Lado V in San José, Costa Rica. He has published in periodicals such as Afterall, ramona, Manifesta Journal, eflux Journal, Art in America, ArtNexus, Art Journal, and The Exhibitionist, among others. He ha recently curated “Frágile: Works by Patricia Belli” 1986 – 2015 at TEOR/éTica, San José (2016); “Teresa Burga: Structures of Air” (with Agustín Pérez Rubio) at the MALBA Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (2015) and the section “God is Queer” for the 31 Bienal de São Paulo (2014). Recent publications include “To Hit a Raw Nerve: Jaime Higa”, 1982 – 2015 (ICPNA, 2016); “Caderno Sesc_Videobrasil 11: Alianças de Corpos Vulneráveis” (Videobrasil and SESC, 2015); and two monographic books on the queer aesthetics of Sergio Zevallos, “The obscene death: Sergio Zevallos” Drawings 1982 –1987 (AMIL, 2015) and “A wandering body: Sergio Zevallos in the Grupo Chaclacayo”, 1982 –1994 (MALI, 2014). He is co-founder of the independent art space Bisagra, active in Lima, Peru, since 2014. In 2016 he was recipient of the Independent Vision Curatorial Award by ICI - Independent
Curators International, New York.
