Amos Eno Gallery presents Escape Earth, an exhibition of mixed media works by Mary J. Saran.

Escape Earth features Saran’s recent works that explore intersections of art and astronomy. Using a mixed media technique that breaks the boundaries between painting and sculpture, the work poses questions about the known universe, human perception and how that perception visualizes space and time. NASA discovers more and more exoplanets every day, even as our own is destroyed. Saran visualizes the landscapes of these yet unknown planets and areas of space to be explored as a window to reflect back onto our own world. Saran paints the galaxies and phenomena that we have yet to discover, the unnamed and unknown. The prospect of human extinction weighs heavily on Saran, and she focuses it into crystal and mineral compositions that suggest and yearn for the search for alien life, dreams of efficient space travel and colonization of other worlds.

Mary J. Saran is currently a student at the School of Art Institute Chicago (SAIC) pursuing a master’s degree in art and art education. She received a bachelor’s degree in art and design and minored in art history at Columbia College, Chicago. Saran has had the privilege of working with professor Michiko Itatani in class at SAIC while preparing for this exhibition. She founded her own company Mary Saran Fine Art, LLC in 2014 for art sales and commissioned paintings for offices and homes. Her post-graduate plans include opening her own gallery space to help build the Chicago art scene and community. Saran has held teacher assistant positions while in school at SAIC and continues to exhibit art nationally.
