IDIO Gallery presents RADICAL HOSPITALITY, an interactive installation by Montana Simone, in her first large-scale New York solo show. Concluding more than two years of work, research, and experience, Radical Hospitality is an investigation of the stranger, of place, and of interactions on the edge. The multimedia installation presents a 1.5-hour abstract film shot over 30 days throughout the Mediterranean, into the Middle East, across Western Europe and up to the Arctic Circle. An itinerant with only a camera, Simone’s eye documents the experience of unsolicited hospitality in these cultures often labeled as hostile in current Western discourse.
Installed in the basement of IDIO Gallery, the art space that Simone has held open for the last two years, the public is radically hosted for the equivalent 30 days straight. Video immerses the viewer; boulder-like sculptures covered in carpets receive the body; and an array of instruments provide creative (or destructive) interaction. From sunrise to sunset, the space will be open to the Absolute Other, to any stranger, to do as they please. In a time of fractured reality, when 65 million are forcibly displaced worldwide, radical hospitality is an experiment in the relinquishing of power. It is a creative response to our shared state of strangeness. At every level, from consciousness to body, native to citizen, guest to host, we cross the threshold at the edge and meet ourselves when we meet the strange.
This installation is the participatory step in a long-form conceptual art piece, where the guest becomes host. Will this experience of radical hospitality engender the same reaction in its guests, to be shared in turn?
Audio recorded during the installation will be compiled and added to the film as its score, to be published as such.
