This event has ended.

Suzanne Demisch and Stephane Danant present The Way of the Essential, an exhibition in three sections offering a distinct perspectives on exceptional French minimalist design from the 1950s to the early 1960s.

Modernity in France was promoted by a generation of designers through a minimalist style that rejected ornament in order to support the most pure and efficient concepts in furniture. Jacques Dumond was a pioneer of this movement and served as a liaison between an older generation of traditional interior designers and those exploring new materials and technologies in the post-war era. Joseph-André Motte further extended Dumond’s concepts and today remains vividly present in French daily life through his large-scale designs of public spaces. Young designers like the husband-and-wife teams of Antoine Philippon & Jacqueline Lecoq and Janine Abraham & Dirk Jan Rol followed, creating some of the most elegant and functional models of their time.

The Way of the Essential reveals connections and influences between key figures and a subsequent generation through masterworks of design.
