This event has ended.

Red asserts itself in a crowd. It grabs your attention when it tells you to stop or warns of danger ahead. The lure of red is irresistable: the lore surrounding it brings depth and meaning to our optical response to its wavelength.

This exhibition presents a wide-angle view of directions in fiber art today.
By definition the genre is rooted in inventive approaches to timeless technology—e.g., weaving, knitting, felting, stitching. Their structural characteristics, as well as intrinsic textures of fabric and thread, contribute expressive value to the artwork. In pace with current technology, options for surface treatment of textiles now includes manipulated digital photography. Current ecological awareness is evident in the imaginative use of recycled substances.

RED features 130 works by 83 members of the Textile Study Group of New York representing 13 states. The exhibition is an expanded and revised version of a show presented last year at two sites in South Korea. It retains the 12 x 12-inch format and dominant color of its predecessor, minus the original’s call for reference to bojagi, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth often pieced together from scraps.

The count of works and artists exceeds those in every other show sponsored by the group in its 40-year history. Dedicated to education and the support of artists committed to fiber as an expressive medium, TSGNY was founded by six artists in 1977 and has now grown to almost 200 members nationally. Additional information can be found on the website: tsgny.org.
