This event has ended.

Pace Prints presents a new body of works by Kate Shepherd, featuring monoprints made at the Pace Paper workshop in Brooklyn, New York.

Titled with names including Teddy, Constance and Henrietta, the new series of monoprints suggests airy perspectival space in single colors: blue, purple, gray and yellow. The images were conceptualized in SketchUp, a program the artist has employed for all of her architecture-oriented paintings and prints. Both systematic and expressive, the monoprints are particularly organic within the scope of Shepherd’s oeuvre. The use of paper pulp to describe hard-edged patterns receding into the background allowed for a less structured, more transparent spatial experience.

Also on view will be a selection of works made on a variety of screenprinted paper, some solid and some patterned. These large-scale, cut and re-assembled triangles relate to the monoprints in their subtle tonal shifts and use of multiple matrices. The Chunk Logos, also based on repetitions of one triangular form are inherently flat but optically dimensional, a testament to Shepherd’s deftness with color, her playfulness with composition and perception.

In the display case, eight expressive graphite drawings entitled Weather (2013) prefigure her most recent drawings on paper. In her most recent work, Tuxedo Park, 36R, Shepherd allowed the process itself to create the image, stopping only when a plausible space had emerged from drawn and chance transfers of ink. The works call to mind a heat map or night vision goggles, a presence that is felt but not seen.

This is Shepherd’s eighth project with Pace Editions since 2004.
