This event has ended.

This forthcoming Minnie Evans retrospective marks the Luise Ross Gallery’s fifth solo exhibition of her work since 1989, when the gallery began representing the estate. For Evans, art was an imperative that started when God came to her in a vision and told her to “draw or die.” She was forty-three at the time, and this directive was the start of a long and productive career spanning over five decades.

Eyes hidden throughout her compositions, faces merging with the rising sun, and rich fantastical florals fill her work with an ethereal beauty, paying tribute to the sacredness she saw in the natural world around her. Stories from the Bible also served as inspiration; angels, Christ, and winged beasts appear frequently. Evans created something more than what she saw before her, she created her own vision of a Garden of Eden. Her work speaks to the power of transcendence, and possibility of transformation, a true visionary indeed.
