This event has ended.

“Being creative is not so much the desire to do something as the listening to that which wants to be done: the dictation of the materials.”
- Anni Albers

The exhibition Baseline explores five artists’ connection to materials, textures and surfaces - curated by Melissa Staiger (2016 Curator-in-Residence at Trestle Projects).

Sophia Chai uses tape, paper, house paint and natural light with a 4 x 5” camera to create abstract photographs to mesh space and image. These photographs defy how we expect to see photographic space.

Jeff Fichera paints intricate works that convey a spectacularly subtle and elusive surface. Fichera has created new modular paintings that consist of 16 panels that can be reconfigured in differing ways to create a red hologram pattern and the illusion of reflected light.

MaDora Frey creates geometric sculptures with painted texture, mirrors, and light. Simultaneously, one can feel both a sense of edge and limitlessness in her work, i.e. in “Kaleidoscope”. An expansive feeling of reflected space is combined with a mossy and earthy color palette that call to mind cell structures and plant life.

Rhia Hurt’s new wall installation of three-dimensional, of mostly white and clear plastic constructed collages hover together on a off-white field. This work explores the metaphysical feelings of abstraction and nature.

Beatrice Wolert works with various materials such as ceramics, fabric, paper, wood, found objects and cement. Her series of convex porcelain sculptures appear to breathe through perforated circular patterns. Wolert is interested in different ways of creating space that connects to personal space.

Baseline will expand past the gallery walls of Trestle Projects with a collaboration in an online exhibition on galleryELL from January 25 - April 24 with additional images and information about the artists. Visit http://galleryell.com
